"We have been and remain stalwart supporters of Israel..."

Anyone who knows anything about the history of the @nytimes and its ownership by the Ochs/Sulzberger family, knows this is a flat-out lie:

Some examples: The @nytimes actively encouraged the British to not open the gates of Mandated Palestine which would have allowed Jews fleeing Nazi persecution a safe haven since it might have furthered the goal of establishing an independent Jewish State there.
The Sulzberger family were major contributors both financially and in print to the viciously anti-Zionist American Council For Judaism. This support continued even after the establishment of the State of Israel.
Sulzberger’s anti-Zionism ran so deep that he resigned as a member of his synagogue, Shearith Israel – the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue – because the israeli national anthem, Hatikvah, was sung at one of its functions.
"Zionism is doomed and the sooner it is a matter of the past and forgotten the better it will be for the Jews of the world."
Adolph Ochs to Lillian Wald, Sept 5, 1929. Quoted in Jerold Auerbach, Print to Fit: The New York Times, Zionism and Israel, 1896-2016.
"The Jews are not a people...certainly there is no such common denominator between the poor unfortunate Jew (in poland)...or myself." Arthur Hays Sulzberger, arguing for restrive immigration quotas. Quoted in Laurel Leff, Buried By The Times
"The 1942 sinking of the Struma, w/ 768 Jews on board who had been denied entry in Turkey while awaiting permits to enter Palestine, was...reported on an inside page as the sinking of a 'Black sea ship..'" 3 weeks later it was finally reported as a "Jewish refugee ship". Auerbach
"When the Vichy Gov in France urged the Roosevelt Admin to facilitate the immigration of "1000's of refugees", especially Jews. the NYT opposed the rescue proposal & supported American restrictions." Auerbach, p.39.
But, the main reason the Ochs/Sulzberger family opposed Zionism & Israel was they felt the loyalty of Jews would be questioned. Yet, outside of the far Right, few newspapers have questioned the loyalty of Zionists as often as the @nytimes...
Whether it's @jonathanweisman & his Jew Tracker, or @giacomonyt accusing pro-Israel Republicans of being more loyal to Israel than the US on the Iran deal or @SherylNYT insinuating that there was something wrong w/ Jews lobbing their gov't for strong US/Israel, it needs to end.
Addendum: @mosaicmag published what is essentially a great summary of the 2nd chapter of Auerbach's book. Joseph Levy was the @nytimes's 1st Jewish Jerusalem Bureau Chief who stamped anti-Zionism as his enduring legacy on the newspaper. h/t @n_koss: mosaicmagazine.com/observation/is…
