Minnesota state House Dems just advanced a bill with a ton of provisions to protect voting rights, end gerrymandering, & join National Popular Vote Compact. Don't expect these to become law, but they could if Dems flip the MN Senate in 2020 (via @MinnPost) revisor.mn.gov/bills/text.php…
I didn't link to MinnPost's article because its entire framing was ahistorical spin about how Dems were suddenly the ones breaking the supposed norm of "all election law changes must be bipartisan." The GOP did that in 2012 yet Dems didn't follow suit when they could have in 2013
A norm of only passing major election law changes with bipartisan support may seem like a decent principle when both parties are acting in good faith, but Minnesota Republicans passed a party-line voter suppression bill right after winning their first majorities in 4 decades ...
Fortunately, Minnesota voters rejected the GOP's voter ID constitutional amendment by a 54-46 margin at the ballot box in 2012. Minnesota remains one of the best states for voting rights & high voter turnout, & the Democrats' new election law package would ensure that continues

HUGE news: A federal court just struck down Ohio's extreme Republican congressional gerrymander (thread to follow)
Ohio has one of the most extreme congressional gerrymanders of any state in the country. Even though Democrats flipped the House in 2018, they won just 4 of 16 Ohio House seats. By contrast, this nonpartisan map could have seen them win 3-4 more seats: dailykos.com/story/2019/3/4…

Michigan Democrats likely would have taken full control of state government in 2018 without Republican gerrymandering. This court ruling striking down these unfair districts could pave the way for a Democratic legislative majority in 2020 if upheld
Michigan voters passed a state constitutional amendment at the ballot box in 2018 to ban gerrymandering by creating an independent citizens' commission, but it won't redraw the maps until 2022, which is why this ruling is a victory for #FairMaps in the upcoming 2020 elections

The decennial census hasn't asked about citizenship status since 1950. The Trump admin claimed they needed the question to enforce the VRA, but three lower courts found that was a deceptive pretext. Plus, we already have citizenship estimates from the voluntary census ACS survey
Millions of people would likely be undercounted if the citizenship question is on the census. That alone would deprive urban areas & communities of color of their rightful representation & federal funding, shifting it to rural whites. But it gets far worse from there

The Electoral College was part of the same compromise that led to the apportionment of the House and Senate. (Recall that each state gets electors = members of House and Senate combined.)

A major, major driving force was slavery.
House-type electors were (and are) proportional to population. But how to count slaves? Under the logic of slavery, it would not be fitting for them to vote. But their owners wanted the power of their numbers. So they counted for three-fifths of a person each.

On this one year anniversary of the election of Donald J Trump to the presidency of the United States, we take a moment to reflect upon the past and ponder our path forward. Without question, the election of President Trump saved our Union from a race to oblivion.
As the past year has shown, we have major issues within our government and its going to take YEARS to right the ship. One man, one election is not going to do it. Voting republican or voting this or that is not sufficient on its own. The governmental problems are systemic.
For over a century the progressives have had it their goal to tear down our system of government. That damned Constitution is simply too rigid for those with grand ambitions. The Constitution that preserves our rights and our Union is seen as an obstacle to those people.
