The U.K. local election results so far - commentary is confusing, or possibly confused? (Thread)
Of course the one angle everyone looks at is Brexit. And while the talk of the last weeks was the Brexit party surge in polls, the ballot box has the LibDems up. Has the electorate turned against Brexit?
Well. You cannot say that. Because Labour is officially pro-Brexit while trying to also be pro-Remain.
But the one thing that local elections anywhere in the world are apparently never about is local matters. Clearly.
And yes. The Brexit party did not run. That would have given us even more of a chance to frame everything as Brexit.

This is my favourite idiotic tweet of the day. It manages to show fabulous ignorance about Washington, London, Berlin, politics and law-making all while pretending to have knowledge about Brussels.
Just to explain: imagine Parliament needs to pass a law on chemicals tomorrow (say in the process of reforming the UK approach). Parliament needs to know what’s the effect on UK industry, companies, environment etc. Who gives the info? Lobbyists...
That doesn’t mean believe everything they say. Of course not. But their input is necessary. You might hate corporate pharma, but you still would want to know what GSK says about drug policy. What Toyota says is the impact of decisions on their workforce in the UK. Etc.

Here’s the problem of Nigel’s get out first, the rest later: you destroy the customer base - and the industry needing it - now. The later deals? Too late.
Quite apart from the fact that the reference to the eurozone is blatent bullshit, the trade happens in the EU, on SM terms in EEA and on FTA terms with Japan, Canada, South Korea...
Oh yeah. And abolishing trade deals with Japan, SK etc. to be able to finally negotiate a trade deal with Japan is also not terribly smart.

Some details that need to be corrected in this tweet (Thread)
The original Can US FTA is not NAFTA. The current US administration did not like NAFTA and renegotiated it to USMCA. In short - it’s not clear which agreement is meant.
As to harmonising currencies, courts and laws, the U.K. had a permanent opt-out of the Euro, the EU does not harmonise courts and as to laws...

In Ireland for a two day #brexit download.

Michel Barnier already trowelling it on a bit thick with the EU family stuff... no doubt the Greeks feel that warm glow; and Mr Macron as he does his Eurozone reboot. Nord Stream II anyone?
Barnier goes on to say that the EU has so far “not received any workable solutions” so is sticking to the backstop as drafted.

That’s a goods border in Irish Sea and turning Northern Ireland into a regulatory enclave of the EU. /2
U.K. sources clear this cannot fly.

We saw what happened in Dec. DUP went ballistic and Sturgeon piled in.
