This is my favourite idiotic tweet of the day. It manages to show fabulous ignorance about Washington, London, Berlin, politics and law-making all while pretending to have knowledge about Brussels.
Just to explain: imagine Parliament needs to pass a law on chemicals tomorrow (say in the process of reforming the UK approach). Parliament needs to know what’s the effect on UK industry, companies, environment etc. Who gives the info? Lobbyists...
That doesn’t mean believe everything they say. Of course not. But their input is necessary. You might hate corporate pharma, but you still would want to know what GSK says about drug policy. What Toyota says is the impact of decisions on their workforce in the UK. Etc.
What is essential is transparency. And transparency is a problem: The number of registered lobbyists in the US is lower than the real number. According to this (old) article, only 1 in 20 lobbyists in the UK is in the register theguardian.com/politics/2015/…
Giving the number of lobbyists alone and by itself - meaningless. Hence my tweet.
