Great insights from @annehelen on a particular complication of remote work, particularly "knowledge work," the temptation to LARP it to prove you're actually working. annehelen.substack.com/p/larping-your…
When I was teaching as a full-time contingent instructor while also writing, I had no need to LARP because I was simply working all the time, as in every moment of the day was consumed with "production."
I now have a remote job working for a company where everyone but me goes into an office, and despite them putting no pressure on me to LARP my job, I sometimes wonder if I should, even if doing so, would take away time better spent delivering on the work I'm hired to do.
This is a full-time job, which is 40 hours a week, but it's silly to measure this kind of job by hours. The weekend before last I "worked" a bunch because I was wrestling with a report. If I was confined to only working in the office, I wouldn't have finished it on deadline.
I'm very lucky that I'm trusted, and I've got a long track record of hitting all my deadlines, so I think I've earned it, but even so, drawing a salary now (as opposed to pure freelance) I do feel the kind of compulsion @annehelen talks about. It's weird.
