Sitting here wondering how much David Brooks was paid to speak at ASU's commencement. Putting the over/under at 1.5 non-tenure track writing instructor annual salaries. nytimes.com/2019/05/07/opi…
Does it bother me that David Brooks likely makes more for a 30 minute address at a football stadium than I used to make in a year teaching 100 or so college students to write? It does. Though, maybe Brooks declined the fee, or donated it to student-facing services at ASU.
I now make more for a one-day appearance speaking on college campuses than I will teaching a semester-long class as an adjunct this fall. Good for me, I suppose, but not so good for the longterm health of higher ed institutions.
I actually try to keep my rate as low as possible while appropriately valuing my labor, and it's a number that I'm going to guess is 1/20th (or even less) of what Brooks was paid, so this is not about maximizing gains in a market economy. It means we don't pay for instructors.
