1. President Donald Trump mocked Christine Blasey Ford last night during a rally. In doing so, he made fun of all women who have experienced the trauma of sexual assault.
2. He also wrote a new chapter in the story of his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. In openly disdaining Ford, and invoking supporters to laugh at her pain, the president tried turning the midterms into a referendum on #MeToo.
3. He’s wrong. November’s midterms, indeed all midterms, are a referendum of the party in control of the White House. This is the case. This has always been the case. I can think of one exception.

1. Here at the Editorial Board, political analysis does not go down easy. It’s often downright bitter, and cold.

Today is no exception.
2. The Senate Judiciary Committee is meeting to vote this afternoon on Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the United States Supreme Court. The full Senate will debate over the weekend. A vote goes to the floor Monday or Tuesday.
3. Though Christine Blasey Ford gave credible (and incredible!) testimony, that has not changed my earlier prediction that Kavanaugh will be confirmed. Nor have I changed my mind about another prediction.

2. But *why* are Trump’s Michigan and Wisconsin numbers so bad? Aren’t the Rust Belt states where the president has found his sturdiest base of power?

That’s the question at the heart of today’s thesis.
3. A leading theory comes from Businessweek’s @JoshuaGreen. He wrote that the trade war with China and other countries is being felt acutely in districts that Trump won in 2016. House Republicans there are in increasing danger of getting fired.

1. I want to build on this argument from last month to suggest that the Never Trumpers are valuable to the cause of liberalism. stoehr.substack.com/p/lost-status-…
2. That may sound daft, but it’s not. Liberalism has always stood for individual liberty, free markets and self-government. This is what it meant to cut ties from the Crown. At the time, anything that wasn’t monarchy was liberalism.
3. Yes, liberalism evolved over the course of the 20th century to include welfare politics and minority rights, but liberty and democracy remained its core.

1. President Trump never apologizes, whether he’s misinformed, mistaken, moody, malicious, or whatever. Never apologize, because saying sorry would mean being wrong, and being wrong would mean being weak.
2. And that’s the worst thing that could happen to this president: for other Republicans to see his ontological weakness.
