If you live in a place with municipal composting—like SF—you do not need a garbage disposal, ever. Food waste is a huge source of CO2 emissions. Turned into compost it sequesters carbon.
Also as @darth indicates, putting food waste down the drain increases the strain, cost, and emissions of the water system.
Along with advocating for more bike and pedestrian communities, fighting for good composting/recycling/waste programs is one of the best things you can do for your community/the planet.
