THREAD: here are important reasons to support the #UberLyftStrike today. uber and lyft profit depends on perpetually sinking driver wages until either the arrival of driverless cars or the erosion/continued lack of public transportation. that’s not a winning scenario for us.
what do dropping rates per mile mean for drivers? longer hours on the road for less money #UberLyftStrike #UberShutDown #UberStrike #LyftStrike thestranger.com/slog/2017/12/2…
uber/lyft claim that they’re merely a platform for contractors, *not* employers obligated to provide drivers protections/benefits. as @Econ_Marshall explains, if that’s true then uber/lyft are actually violating antitrust law by “price-fixing” millions of rides 🤔 #UberLyftStrike
“In 2016, Uber and Lyft deployed 370 lobbyists around the country—more than Amazon, Microsoft and Walmart combined. In the first half of 2017, Uber [spent] $1.8 million to affect [NY] state-level legislation." labor lawyer @_ceilidh bit.ly/2vrgqb8
where does uber & lyft lobby funding go? to things like fighting collecting bargaining efforts and wage raises in seattle, fighting congestion regulations in new york, threatening cities to leave if they don’t get their way and more nelp.org/news-releases/… #UberLyftStrike
uber thinks it’s above democracy. in 2017, it was even caught for running its cars in various cities around the world without permission. to evade detection by city authorities posing as riders to catch them, uber targeted city officials with a FAKE APP nytimes.com/2017/03/03/tec…
uber and lyft also love arbitration! uber canada tried to force the resolution of disputes IN THE NETHERLANDS an ontario court deemed the “agreement” unconscionable and invalid. both companies are still very much allowed to force US consumers out of court. business.financialpost.com/transportation…
as our thread demonstrates, there are many, many excellent reasons to support the #UberLyftStrike so stand in solidarity with the drivers and our cities today!
“Doug Schifter, a New York City livery driver, committed suicide on the steps of City Hall ... With the industry collapsing, he had lost his health insurance, was deep in debt, and said he was working up to 100 hour weeks.” currentaffairs.org/2018/03/maybe-…
