Final talk for the afternoon is by Danielle Matthews - what are the effects of parents talking to their babies on language development? Do the effects last? And are they worth it? #Naplic19
Predictors of word use in children's second year of life - the two biggest positive predictors at 1 year 1) the amount of vocalisations, 2) babies turning to gaze at what they are vocalising about #Naplic19
Research shows that contingent talk is correlated w/parent education & vocabulary dev. Qu: would parents from lower SES areas be able to improve their use of contingent response & will this benefit child lang development? #Naplic19
Contingent talk described as 2-step process: 1) TUNE IN (notice what child is looking at) & 2) TALK (talk to them about it). Training provided to parents in a 1x 10-min video demonstrating contingent talk. Resulted in sig. increase in amt & contingency of parent talk 1 mnth later
This had an effect on child language, but only in the short term. Assumption -is that this type of intervention training would need to be repeated to maintain the outcomes as the child continues to develop. #Naplic19
2nd study is RCT comparing book donation + contingent talk Rx V book donation only. Qu: would 10-mins a day over 4-months using contingent talk while looking at picture books lead to sig. change? Outcome: NOT EFFECTIVE. Suggestion: it is far better to talk to young ch/ren
Conclusions: 1) Shared book reading Rx not as effective as promoting oral lang in any everyday context, 2) book sharing Rx are less effective w/ younger ch/ren & lower SES ch/ren #Naplic19
Studies consistently show that early intervention during infancy do not demonstrate a sig. +ve effect. Danielle Matthews linking back to @cristina_mckean 's talk from this am- early intervention is not a magic bullet. Ch/ren w/ sig. difficulties need support across the lifespan.
