@AKA_RealDirty 1) “The appearance of the investigation itself was the political need; the substance was non-existent & immaterial to the creation of the narrative.” "Sundance" (5/12/18)

“Truth does less good ... than the appearance of it does evil.” François duc de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680)
@AKA_RealDirty 2) The template for the Trump-Russia Collusion “Insurance Policy”

In the months leading up to the 1980 election, then-President Jimmy Carter desperately wanted to secure release of American hostages held by Iranian Islamic revolutionaries.
@AKA_RealDirty 3) At the time, Republican Candidate Ronald Reagan’s campaign manager (and later CIA director) William J. Casey worried an “October surprise” hostage release might cement Carter’s re-election. As it happened, Reagan won and the hostages were not freed until Inauguration Day.
@AKA_RealDirty 4) Nearly a decade after the fact, former National Sec Council aide Gary Sick made a name for himself by alleging Casey (by then deceased) had met with Iranian representatives in Madrid & Paris and cut a deal to delay release of the captives until after the Nov 1979 election.
@AKA_RealDirty 5) Sick claimed Casey had promised the Iranians a quid pro quo: Should Reagan win the Presidency, he would name Casey CIA director and Casey would then be able to clandestinely provide Iran with U.S. weapon systems and spare parts.
@AKA_RealDirty 6) “We have NO conclusive EVIDENCE of wrongdoing, but the SERIOUSNESS OF THE ALLEGATIONS & the weight of circumstantial information compel an effort to establish the facts.” Democrat House Speaker Tom Foley & Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, August 1991. (EMPHASIS MINE)
@AKA_RealDirty 7) Separate House & Senate investigations, which dragged on for a year, ultimately concluded Sick's allegations were utterly baseless. But the hearings had served their purpose, which was to damage President H.W. Bush’s re-election chances. In 1992, he lost to Dem Bill Clinton.
