So I caught up on the last couple of episodes of Game of Thrones. Which only reinforced my take on this season, and the last one: they feel like the highlight reel from three or four longish seasons of a show that actually bothered telling a coherent story.
GoT SPOILER ALERT:

Dany's decision to torch King's Landing made absolutely no sense in the context of the episode, or the prior episodes. It happened because the plot needed it to happen.
There could absolutely have been a context in which it made sense, but it would have taken a lot longer to create that context than the showrunners gave themselves when they somewhat arbitrarily set the length of the remaining seasons a while back.
Though tbh, I see little evidence they could have made it plausible even with 20 more episodes to work with.
