Two days ago Kat and I were pulling out of a parking lot and a man knocked on our window holding a large stack of money. He was begging us for a ride to the train station saying someone stole $1,000 from him. We couldn’t do it but while driving away a gun fell out his pants.
The gun was in his socks it looked like and he picked it up and moved it to his belt. Through our conversation and his demeanor he seemed to be suffering from a mental health situation and/or addiction. He then continued walking to other cars.
I think most white people would have called the cops. This man could have been carjacking us but he could have even more likely just been a law abiding citizen suffering through something. If the cops showed up they would have killed him. I of course wouldn’t call.
But on the other hand he could hurt someone. But I’ve been thinking since then how messed up it is that we live in a society that I was sure if I called for help he would be dead. We desperately need mental heath first responders that are entirely separate from our thug police.
In Portland police are routinely killing people in mental health crisis. It was just a sad scenario and there’s nothing I could do to help.
