What people fail to realise is that if you actually follow the ‘keep yourself safe from rape’ logic of the preventative advice given to women then statistically, women should be told:

Never date or marry a man
Never be a child
Never live in a house with a man
Never be female

The majority of all sexual offences occur against women and girls, 97% perpetrated by male partners, exes and family members, 95% occur within a dwelling.

So the ‘don’t wear headphones, don’t wear a ponytail, don’t walk in the dark’ advice is bollocks.

So how come this never filters into the so-called ‘safety advice’ for women?

Funny how we ignore the common denominator in favour for bullshit safety advice about headphones and fucking ponytails.

As perfectly demonstrated by @gemma_brett comment at my conference yesterday - if we cannot NAME the problem (male violence) we cannot move forward.

The risk is not coming from headphones and fuckin ponytails or going on the tube or walking to work.

The ‘rapists are evil monsters who lurk outside and will jump out and attack you’ narrative serves to keep women and girls inside dwellings - where they are statistically WAY more likely to actually be raped and abused by men already in their lives.

The monsters aren’t outside.
