📢~ design test survey early results ~🔊

- almost every company that expects people to do take home design tests with absolutely $0 compensation
- many of them ask candidates to solve a problem thats important to the company or shippable

have u done one? fill out the survey!
other early learnings
- a lot of people spend anywhere from 1.5 to 2x the quoted time the company told them to spend
- about a quarter of companies implicitly or explicitly expected people to spend more time than quoted
shopify's entry here shoudn't be in this survey. im retracting it from the final data set because its clearly a 1 hour whiteboard session

I went thru interviews recently and it sucked

But i have a lot of learnings

Would writing about this be helpful?

Fave for yes, reply if curious specific parts (screening, folio preso, vetting, negotiations, deciding)
Heres some example thoughts (maybe I can just tweet about it)

Interviewing when unemployed is actually super terrible. Most companies work at a timescale where they expect you to be working full time. Waiting weekends is excrutiating bc that's the same as a weekday to you
Set timelines up front.

"I'm hoping to have some confidence in where I'm headed in the next 2-3 weeks"

This helped accelerate processed and set expectations (and screen ppl who were not looking at that time scale)

If you've ever actually konmari'd anything, you'll know it takes a LONG time and a LOT of hard decisions. I've been working on this tool for 3 weeks and I still haven't finished Konmari-ing my 1000 initial follow (now at 600~ left)

But if you finish, there's something waiting!
I had a lot of fun making this on @glitch, using promises, @expressjs @vuejs and the @TwitterAPI (alas, rate limits!) for the first time and learned a lot!

1/ They’re masters of coherence in arguments, information, and statements. Expect to be called out (bluntly) on something ... and for them to be right.
2/ Don’t assume silence means a lack of interest. Sadly, introverts get chased out of the “business world”. In the swdev team world, extroverts AND introverts thrive (cool huh?). Many or my dev friends choose to chew on a thought for a long time before interjecting.
3/ Imagine a world where your every keystroke is (basically) measured, scrutinized, Jira-ed, and reviewed. And ****ing up means the whole app can go down (or worse). Compare that to your world, where you can often dismiss something with a hand wavy “that’s a learning!”

Now that the dust has settled a bit on the Strava heatmap privacy story, what lessons can we learn? I was interviewed about this on CBC radio. Here are the highlights. cbc.ca/radio/spark/38…
If we’re worried about state actors getting this information, they’re not limited to looking at public websites. Dozens of companies have incredibly sensitive, fine-grained location data on millions of individuals. These are juicy targets for coercion or hacking.
The Strava heatmap is a symptom of a bigger problem. Let’s use it as a trigger for a conversation about the deeper issues that it hints at, one of which is the lack of public oversight of how companies collect and use sensitive data.
