I agree with @VictimsComm that we must improve public understanding of criminal sentencing. The criminal justice system, politicians and the media must do better in explaining how sentencing works. Three examples of how we do things wrong: [MINI THREAD]
1. The Crown Prosecution Service regularly publishes guff press releases aggregating sentences for multiple defendants, giving a wholly misleading impression of the individual sentences passed: thesecretbarrister.com/2017/11/17/bad…
2. Sentencing law has become so hideously complex as a result of politicians constantly tinkering with it for cheap headlines that even judges can’t understand it:
3. Politicians, commentators and newspapers continue to publish ill-informed rubbish about sentencing for clicks. Such as this from last week by wannabe Prime Minister Boris Johnson: thesecretbarrister.com/2019/05/24/ign…
Much is born of political cowardice to make sober evidence-based arguments as to what can be achieved by sentencing, and desperation to appease the tabloids through “tough” sentences. So we end up with a sentencing regime that the public don’t understand, and faith is undermined.
