Here's '10 Things To See In Vienna (That You May Have Missed)', since it won yesterday's poll. Hope you enjoy these suggestions for a *very* unique city!
10. Augustinerkirche & Ungarisches Haus - The former Augustinian monastery church (and Habsburg family church) is a sight to behold. Look for the epic cenotaph tomb to Duchess Maria, who had a doomed relationship with Isabella of Parma.
10a. Also try to get access to the crypt, containing the hearts of many Habsburgs in urns.

The house across is the street is the former residence of Elizabeth Bathory, the 'Blood Countess' who tortured her servants.

9. Cafe Schwarzenberg - There are many cafes in Vienna - the city is famous for the very particular way they do things. Many of the very popular cafes always have a queue - this place doesn't, but still has the lavish furnishings and immaculate service.

8. Virgilkapelle - Accessible through the Stephansdom U-Bahn station, this is the excavated remnant of a medieval funerary chapel. Incredibly atmospheric and with a cool little museum attached.

7. Römer Museum Wien - Long before Vienna was Vienna, it was the Roman fort Vindobona, a base during the Marcomannic wars. In fact, Marcus Aurelius died here! Unique museum showing the history of the fort, and excavated remains of officer's quarters.

6.  Wiener Kriminalmuseum - In addition to cafes, the Viennese do crime differently. They're a messed up bunch for sure, based on this place. Lots of crazy punishment tools, murder weapons and, yes, bits of criminals. A bit NSFW, but by no means dumb.

5. Secession - This unique 'jugendstil' building was built in the 19th century as a showcase for the new wave of artists establishing themselves in Vienna. The exterior is fantastic, and there's terrific murals inside, along with showcase of local artists.

4. Deutschordenhaus - The local headquarters of the Teutonic Knights (and eventual sole hq), the museum here contains the treasures of the order gathered over 500+ years. Many knights are buried in the chapel, and you can also stay here!

3. Ruprechtskirche - Vienna's oldest standing church, dedicated to Rupert, the patron saint of salt traders (once a thriving trade in town). Beautifully ancient, simple church, with a suprise bejeweled 'saint' in the corner! maps.app.goo.gl/3P9C4ix81TJMWQ…

10. The Museum of the Order of St John - In a pretty spectacular gatehouse next to their medieval English HQ, @StJohnsGate tells the story of one of the most important chivalric orders of the Middle Ages - and how they ended up with the ambulances!

9. St Bartholomew the Great - Way before there was St Bart's Hospital, this Anglo-Norman church was part of a priory ministering to the sick and poor. Hell of a story to @StBartholomews, and so atmospheric it's been used in many films.

The last few days I've done '10 Things to do in City X', because, well, I was bored and I love helping people find cool stuff to see. Today is the turn of Berlin, since it won the last poll. One of my favourite cities, here's the stuff to see you may have missed!
10. Berlin Wall Memorial - Preserved section of wall and watchtowers, as well as memorial to all those who died trying to cross the wall. Good museum with interpretive film too. Walls don't work! maps.app.goo.gl/AFdNZiSDX8f6za…

Yesterday, I did a thread on ten places to check out in Rome that aren't *completely* overrun by tourists. Today, I'm doing Prague, since it won the poll I ran at the end. Good thing I love the place! Here's ten cool places to see in and around the Czech capital!
10. Sedlec Ossuary - Ok, a bit out of town, but needs to be seen. Created at the start of the 18th century out of bones that had been buried at the Church of All Saints, this is the mother of all 'memento mori'. A grisly masterpiece of arranged bone!

9. U Medvidku - I don't usually put restaurants on these lists, but this place has been brewing beer since the 15th century. Amazing brews and pork dishes served within.

Setting aside Anarchist, Marxian, radical or primarily sociological theories for a second, I can think of 12 theories of the state off the top of my head that have, at least some credible empirical, historical & explanatory legitimacy and support. They're quite simple, actually.
1. Charles Tilly - States make war, wars make states; states are defined by their relationship to war & social change
2. Theda Skocpol - States are autonomous zones of contestation of social change & elite/class conflict/dominance
3. Barrington Moore - Similar to the above (it precedes them), it sees the state in terms of dominant classes, their alliances & how they're constrained
4. Padgett/Powell - States are semi-autonomous emergent results of strategic action by well placed network/institutional actors
