In this 2015 speech, Senator Warren talks in detail about government's role in systemic racism, and what it needs to do to end it. Here are 6 clips that stood out to me.

1. Warren on housing discrimination:
"Economic justice has not ever been sufficient to ensure racial justice"
2. Warren on police brutality:

"...but we also know and must say the names of those whose lives have been treated with callous indifference: Sandra Bland, Freddy Gray, Michael Brown.. [...] Their lives ended by those sworn to protect them"
3. Warren on the racial wealth gap:

"In the 1960s-70s, African-American men and women began to close the wage gap with white workers; giving millions of Black families real hope that they could build economic security. But then Republican economic trickle-down theory arrived..."
4. Warren on the 2008 crash's effects on Black families:

"The crash hit African-Americans like a punch in the gut because middle class Black families' wealth was disproportionately tied up in home ownership [...] but they also got hit harder because of discriminatory practices"
5. Warren on police reform:

"ALL police forces, not just some, should be trained to DE-escalate and avoid the likelihood of violence. [...] This is America, not a war zone. And policing practices in ALL cities, not just some, need to reflect that reality"
6. Warren on voter suppression:

"It's time to call out the recent flurry of new state law restrictions for what they are: an all-out campaign by Republicans to take away the right to vote from poor, and Black, and Latino American citizens who probably won't vote for them"
The fact that Warren is going into detail about systemic racism to an almost all white crowd matters. Most politicians only ever mention race in front of Black ppl while campaigning. I appreciate that she cares enough to study our experience in depth and seeks to educate others.
Lastly, this 2015 speech is proof that Warren isn't pandering with her current policies that focus on Black folks. She's been thinking about these issues and encouraging others to for a while. We should expect EVERY candidate to turn their outreach into meaningful policy too. xo.
