Our statement on the dangerous overcrowding at the DHS processing center in El Paso:

We need to open our arms to immigrants, not to greet people who arrive here with armed soldiers.

The stories of dangerous overcrowding are deeply concerning.
We’ve heard countless stories from our brothers and sisters who have had to sleep standing up and had to go without food and water for hours.
DHS is making a conscious decision to spend more money on the further militarization of the border, with additional spending on unproven surveillance technology, and less funding on humanitarian aid such as medical care and nutritious food.
Six children have lost their lives in recent months as a result of experiencing this inhumane system, and thousands more have got sick because the processing centers are not run in a humane and fair way.
We call on DHS stop to detaining immigrants at the border.

It’s morally unacceptable to lock immigrants up in barbaric conditions simply because they are seeking asylum.
