Trump announced his intentions to levy 5% tariffs on Mexican imports starting June 10th.

If imposed, this will have a tremendous impact on the huge number of asylum-seekers from across the 🌎 that come through 🇲🇽, which has been a gateway to those fleeing violence & poverty.

The Trump administration is once again trying to kill asylum in the U.S. by any means possible, this time turning to a wholly unrelated policy—tariffs—in an attempt that would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous.

The policy is also very likely illegal. The U.S. does not have an agreement with 🇲🇽 designating it a “safe third country,” nor can Mexico be considered safe for those en route to the U.S.

How do we know this?

We’ve represented hundreds of refugees who’ve come through Mexico and can speak of its dangers: transgender women forced to wait in Tijuana because of metering, women sexually assaulted as they roamed the streets of Juarez, young men beaten and preyed upon.

The list is endless.

Along with the Remain in Mexico policy, metering, the asylum ban, and other anti-immigrant policies from the White House, this policy is meant to do one thing: stop legal asylum into this country.

It is the latest farce from a delusional president with a monomaniacal focus on harming some of the most vulnerable people in the world, who want nothing more than to escape the violence & poverty that has plagued their countries. We will work to oppose it by all means necessary.
