1/ Homelessness in LA county has risen (count will be released soon). A paradox is that a significant percent of people becoming homeless do so after getting evicted.. but places with high eviction rates have low homelessness
2/ homelessness is correlated w/ high rents & high poverty & low rates of home building. California and Hawaii have high rents, significant poverty despite lots of wealth, and low homebuilding. The high-eviction regions have cheaper housing
3/ this is relevant because policy solutions to prevent homelessness rightly focus on housing security, including reducing evictions.. but ignore housing supply except deed-restricted (I’d say due to ideological blindspot of traditional homelessness advocates)
4/ this is reason #893 why the rise of ‘Yimby’ groups is so important. High cost areas need a full spectrum pro home building and pro tenant agenda. Ignoring or opposing market rate housing creates a terrible cascade of housing problems that harm the poor the most
