Just watched the #CNNTownhall with 2024 Presidential candidate and former President @realDonaldTrump , as well as the post-townhall panel discussion.

One thing is clear: #America is a broken country. It's split right down the middle.

(1/)
Racial divisions and #massshootings are peaking, the economy is cratering, #poverty and #homelessness are rising.

And meanwhile, the US government is involved in, or threatening to get involved in, wars from #Ukraine to #Taiwan to #Syria to #Iran to #NorthKorea.

(2/)
When they should be working on healing the divisions in their own nation. White vs non-White, Rural vs Urban, Rich vs Poor, drug addiction, broken homes - all these are tearing America apart.

When I (would) describe what most elected officials do for #Homeless people, I (would) say that they do as much as their constituents will let them get away with. Today won't be the case with @CMWhitburnD3 at the behest of @MayorToddGloria
today's discussion about amendments to the @CityofSanDiego's Municipal Code Related to Unauthorized Camping or Encampments on Public Property should be condemned
Whitburn is following the lead of his #NIMBY constituents when they won't allow any small measure to relieve the suffering of their #neighbors

A pt. I cared for in ED:

I’m hungry & tired doc. I’ve got no home & eat only what I can find.

G - what about the shelters?

They’re not safe for an old guy like me. Can’t go there.

G - where do u sleep?

Anywhere. I ride the train until I get kicked out then I walk.

1/4
G - our winter is really cold, that’s so hard, I’m sorry

“Ha! You’re telling me. I find giant empty warm buildings all the time but can’t get in. I just need a warm place so I dont freeze. Nothing big. 400sq feet would be great.

I look for work but am told I’m too old.”
2/4
“I’ve got a skilled trade & >20yrs of exp but can’t get work cause they just throw us old guys away.

People think the #homeless are worthless but there’s kindness on the street. Everyone shares the little they have. Everyone just trying to survive.”

@IOL The figure is attributed to Homeless Solutions, a non-profit organisation based in Pretoria.

The claim is not based on evidence, but on what a representative told us was “experience and observation”. africacheck.info/homeless_peopl…
@IOL The figure is inconsistent with various estimates and a recent attempt to count all street-homeless people in the City of Tshwane (Pretoria). africacheck.info/homeless_peopl…

September 2022: @MayorToddGloria explains "complex barriers to #housing" at announcement of new #housing location
January 2023: The converted hotel will provide NO ADA ACESS for unsheltered older adults w/#disabilities even though it is managed by a senior-serving organization
More from @MayorToddGloria last year re:the budget for this facility to serve people experiencing #homelessness compared to "hospital and emergency room stays" & it's place in #CityofSanDiego budget (sorry for poor sound quality)
This facility will cost "a bit over $700K per year"
FYI: The fastest growing unhoused group is older adults Many are frail and/or have age-related medical issues & related #disabilities
And yet: No #ADA🤦🏽‍♀️
But: Plenty of #security!

Remember when @sullivanms provided hot drinks to people kicked out of #SanDiego inclement weather shelters at 5AM?
FYI: #AlphaProjectSD does "not aim at making #homelessness easier, or less costly, or more tolerable"

Alpha staff does this to make lives even harder for #PEH
1/
#AlphaProjectSD gets millions in taxpayer $$ to provide #homelessness shelter & services- yet has failed to provide clean restrooms & or safe drinking water
Despite record rainfall: they don't provide more inclement weather shelters

So disappointed to hear @KPBS #MiddayEdition hosting #BobMcElroy from #AlphaProjectSD
Have they reviewed his salary & tax returns?
Taxpayers subsidize his shelters w/horrible conditions
Few people get #housing after a shelter stay

@inewsource @dulaney ImageImageImageImage
He mentions his staff struggles to afford rent-
Perhaps he could demonstrate "personal responsibility" by not driving a Maserati?
Or reduce his $245K salary & pay caseworkers doing direct services more so they aren't #housing insecure?

#SanDiego criminalizes people living in #poverty & #homelessness
When #unhoused people are cited for encroachment they are given the option to "work off" fines by doing free labor for #AlphaProjectSD
Meanwhile: Alpha gets @CityofSanDiego contracts to provide this labor

Let's review @MayorToddGloria's previous #SOTCSD remarks, what he said- and what he did not say- and how people reacted.
1) 2022- He never mentioned how @SanDiegoPD routinely criminalize people for being unhoused and/or needing to use a bathroom
2) But @MayorToddGloria has pledged things like:
Transparency (see: Ash Street)
Fiscal responsibility (Also- see Ash St. $175M bond)
And equity (See: lack of #EEOC contract compliance)
3) #Homelessness & #Diversity? Not so good.
5% of #SanDiego residents are Black
20% of unhoused residents are Black

In 2019 #SanDiego #AlphaProject's Bob McElroy was on multiple IRS filings:
"Low income housing" for "Anaheim Gardens Corporation," and "Oxford Terrace"- and another for Alpha Project
He's running a multimillion #Homelessness Industrial Complex w/ multiple charities

Their operations include exploiting people via "crew labor"-
People who are criminalized for #homelessness & arrested for encroachment violations are offered a chance to "work off" their penalties doing unpaid labor for Alpha Project
2/ ImageImageImage
Meanwhile people living in the #AlphaProject shelters had to wait weeks for safe drinking water, despite reports of "drinking water for clients/staff is coming out brown/yellow"

.@prattprattpratt is the worst kind of Californian. Because those who have #housing are often most culpable for standing in the way of solutions - even of ½ @$$ed solutions. Image

Today I was driving in the NE in and around the neighbourhoods when I was about to turn around and head home when I saw someone flag me down.

A older gentleman and his girlfriend asked me if I had any water or anything to eat. @cmcalgary
I pulled over, put my flashers on. I got out to grab them some water and snacks and saw the older gentleman limping & in obvious pain.

When I say hobbling I mean every few steps he stopped to catch his breath because he was in so much pain.

That’s when I said I’d come to them.
I grabbed some bottles of water, snacks, some backpacks, and asked them if they needed anything else.

He told me his bandages had dried to his skin and that he was refused care at a place here in Calgary when he asked for a dressing change.

Brief thread on #homelessness and humanity.
Yesterday, I took my son to a baseball game. We parked a few blocks away, which meant that we needed to walk down a street with a large encampment (1/)
This is not new for my 9 yr old who knows how to recognize overdose & use naloxone. We talk about ppl experiencing homelessness a lot in our house — why it happens, what we can do, etc. (2/)
As we walked down the sidewalk, one of the people yelled “child walking thru”—which was the most human thing I’ve ever seen. (4/)

“In Finland, the # of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.” scoop.me/housing-first-…
I’ll keep tweeting this one until I don’t have to tweet it anymore.
Finland’s success with solving homelessness isn’t because its scale or population size is different than where you live. Approaches and solutions like this are, in most cases, scalable. Finland’s success is because its values and priorities are different than where you live. Image

Dehumanization lets us treat others as less than human - this prejudice about unhoused folks is part of the systemic violence harming already vulnerable populations.

Gross, editorial moralizing from the local media & elected officials is irresponsible.🧵

Above the fold, on the front page of the @newsminer’s 6/5 Sunday paper, an article ran with the title “Golden Heart Plaza safety concerns continue.” The article’s spotlight on safety begs a question: Concern for whom?
When Roberto froze to death last November, unsheltered in -20°F temperatures, where was the article concerned about his safety? Or, for all the people experiencing the same crisis.

This is the cynic's guide to making Cape Town the greatest city in the world!
1. Law Enforcement must take charge of this city. Indiscriminately fine the homeless - especially in winter - as it will fundamentally deter more homeless from living in the inner city;
2. Increase Law Enforcement officers because crime = homelessness = crime. Lets not pay attention to other areas in our City where shootings and murders take place, because that is a National SAPS matter.
