I’m at the MoveOn #BigIdeas forum in San Francisco outside of #CADem19 — should be an intriguing format. Candidates get 5 minutes to present their “big idea,” and then will have moderated questions. Stay tuned for who shines and who … does otherwise.
First up: Bernie Sanders. Warm welcome from crowd.
Bernie Sanders’ “big idea” is endless war.
“We have got to stop endless wars, we have got to cut military spending,” he says.
On that note, read my profile of Rep. Ro Khanna, who is co-chairing his campaign and who has bonded with him over this issue: sfchronicle.com/politics/artic…
Maybe we can use that money to transition our energy system away from fossil fuels and save the planet, and in the process create millions of good paying jobs. That is my big idea, Bernie closes.
(So he tied ending endless war back to his more expected campaign message)
(mild shots fired)
Bernie Sanders says he chose ending endless war as his “big idea” because "very few people are talking about this issue. And I have to be honest about it, it’s not just Republicans who support too-big military budgets, it’s many Democrats, as well.”
Before he gets to his big idea, Cory Booker notes the shooting yesterday and says "the best big idea … (is) the power of the people is greater than the people in power."
Booker’s #BigIdeas idea is baby bonds — a $1,000 interest-bearing account that gets up to $2K per year for lowest income children every year.
“We are a nation where it should be survival of the children of the wealthiest”
.@CoryBooker getting animated asked about fighting white supremacy. Calling it a “threat to our democracy,” he adds:
“I’m going to make sure that here out in Silicon Valley that these social media platforms do not become platforms for hate and bigotry”
@CoryBooker .@CoryBooker brought #BigIdeas the crowd to its feet.

“This election we have to understand is not a spectator sport, you can’t just sit home and watch MSNBC and cheer for your team, red or blue.”
.@ewarren takes the stage to a HUGE cheer and Dolly Parton’s "9 to 5"
@ewarren Warren now doing snippets of the stump speech I heard last night in Oakland.
“I want an America that doesn’t just work for a thin slice at the top, I want to build an America that works for the rest of us”
#BigIdeas
@ewarren Biggest Warren applause has been her answer on gun violence. “It’s not just mass shootings, this is happening all across America...on sidewalks and playgrounds...it’s happening family by family across America and it doesn’t get the same headlines. And that is wrong.” #bigideas
@ewarren Warren was asked what she’d say to a young person turned off to politics.
“A lot of people want to talk about the guy in the White House, and I get it – blech. But we need to think about an America that was broken long before it arrived, an America that elected him.” #BigIdeas
.@BetoORourke’s #bigideas idea is treating immigrants and refugees with respect, not trying to get tough on them.
And he got applause for dropping a BS “all of this bullshit that in no way, any way effectively represents the best traditions of the United States of America”
@BetoORourke Interesting, Beto talking about the need to invest in Central America to cut back on the need to flee gets only very tepid applause, vs. “Instead of meeting them with the wall or this cruelty or the inhumanity or the torture”-type lines.
@BetoORourke Beto says the movement should keep up the pressure that caused Tornillo to close down.
Its contract wasn’t renewed, but there’s another temp facility that opened in Florida with similarly thousands of kids.
And we’re back at #BigIdeas with @SenGillibrand. Her idea?
“What does the United States have in common with Papua New Guinea and no other country in the world?” she starts, stumping the crowd. “We don’t actually have a national paid family leave program.”
@SenGillibrand “One of the worst thing President Trump has done is left the world stage,” Gillibrand says. “There is no better example of this than the blind eye he is turning to Central and South America … and he’s closing our border, he’s putting up a wall to say, ‘We’re not here for you.’”
Biiiiig cheer for @KamalaHarris at #BigIdeas as she takes the stage. What will her big idea be? Let’s see...
@KamalaHarris .@KamalaHarris#bigideas idea is her equal pay proposal, which (as I’m sure she’s about to say) puts the onus on business to show the government they’re paying employees equally.
@KamalaHarris Harris gets applause when she mentions her teacher pay offhand, so she launches into that plan as well.
“There is clearly a connection between the fact that this is a profession that is primarily women and they are paid less than similar professionals”
