I have been critical of @hrw and other human rights organisations' stance on antisemitism in the past - so really good to see Human Rights Watch now making a clear statement, including mention of the EHRC investigation into the UK Labour Party hrw.org/news/2019/06/0…

@hrw As far as I am aware (please correct me if I'm wrong @CoreyStoughton) @libertyhq have made no statement or posted a tweet about antisemitism in recent years, save for in 2018 its conference passing a motion against the use of the IHRA definition of antisemitism
@hrw @CoreyStoughton @libertyhq It would be good to see @libertyhq make a clear statement on antisemitism as HRW has done. Appreciate it's sensitive as the previous director (Shami Chakrabarti) is involved in the issues around Labour - but now a EHRC investigation is underway it is more problematic to ignore

My heart sank when I saw that appellant lost in @UKSupremeCourt case of Poole Borough Council v GN, on whether local authorities can be sued in common law negligence when they fail to protect children under their care

My old colleague the formidable Lizanne Gumbel QC was for the appellant
Basically, the appellants lost on the particulars facts but the Supreme Court completely rejected the Court of Appeal's reasoning, which would have put a stop to claims in negligence against local authorities for failing their child protection duties.

As I have said for ages, the same narrow-minded, historically illiterate arguments which supported Brexit (national sovereignty, reclaiming control etc) can, superficially, apply to the European Convention on Human Rights.
Predictably, Sumption made those arguments in an non-nuanced and reactionary way, and those who listened think, well this is a Supreme Court judge, he must be on to something. There are so many SC judges who would have been more responsibly critical or supportive

Momentum have made a video about #antisemitism on the left. It's good that they've tried and the examples of antisemitic tropes are familiar enough. But there's a few revealing problems with this video... /1
Firstly and most obviously, claiming that Corbyn is a perfect example of how to listen to the Jewish community and oppose antisemitism is - what's the word - IRONIC. I think. /2
Secondly, 'don't be antisemitic to me because I'm a good Jew who boycotts Israeli goods' kind of misses the point. /3

The @UKLabour / @jeremycorbyn #antisemitism issue shows no signs of abating. Unfortunately, there is even a difference of opinion on why this is, which is why I've been incredibly reluctant to write anything about it. Regardless, here's my perspective: /1
My entire life, I have been opposed to racism and prejudice in any form. This was instilled by my upbringing, personal experiences and natural inclination to defend others facing prejudice. As a teen, I was the one in school who stood up to bullying whenever I saw it happen. /2
I fought my own fights and the fights of people too scared or small to take action. It was a natural instinct. It got me into some trouble, but generally, what I did was appreciated by the victims of the abuse, the parents of the victims, teachers, bouncers and even the police /3

Lots of articles, some useful podcasts from some of the pro-Corbyn commentariat on left antisemitism but three words noticeably absent from the debate. Jewish. Labour. Movement.

Also, the role new-left media has played in fostering an antisemitic culture has been overlooked 2/
Opposing left wing antisemitism means challenging parts of new-left media where anti-Jewish bias is prevalent. There's just no way round this. Some specific examples: The Canary's been on a mission to normalise the Nazi metaphor with Israel. (Really helpful guys, thanks)
