Now that all of the Canadian networks have unveiled their primetime schedules for next season, can we talk about how utterly disappointing it is to see so few scripted Canadian TV originals on the schedules?
Other than @CBC, there are absolutely ZERO scripted Canadian originals this fall. CTV is holding both the new drama @TransplantCTV and hit series @CardinalCTV until midseason. Same for Corus with the upcoming #Nurses.
One thing I've learned covering #Cdntv over the past few years is how MUCH talent exists BTS in this industry. There are so many great voices and ideas out there just waiting to be tapped. I really wish networks would invest in that because it all has a trickle down effect too.
New original scripted series are needed in order to keep fostering and growing all that talent. Too few shows mean that these talented people aren't getting an opportunity to learn, to grow, to progress through the ranks and to shine.
Don't even get me started on what that means for diverse voices -- especially female POC & Indigenous voices. While casting has slowly become more diverse, there's still much work to be done BTS & more rooms with more openings would go a long way in helping these voices be heard.
Also yes, audiences seem to want procedurals, but Canadian networks please know you CAN do so much more than just more medical and police procedurals. Look at the success of shows like #SchittsCreek, #Letterkenny & #WynonnaEarp & their popularity also in the U.S.
Bottom line: Canada's brand of storytelling should be invested in. It's time for the networks to catch up and take some chances. It's not just Canadians who are hungry for it. The world is as well.
