NEW: The judge in EDVA rules that George Nader remain detained. Says there are no combinations of conditions of release that would ensure the safety of the community. Added that the defense did not provide enough evidence to convince the court.
In the detention hearing, the government noted that one of the phones analyzed in 2018 contained text messages between Nader and MBZ. And separate messages with a rep of MBS
Nader allegedly transferred child pornography to the US. He was arrested Monday. The preliminary hearing is Monday at 3 pm.
The government said it brought Nader to a doctor Monday and that doctor said something to the effect of: “Don’t bring healthy people in here”
Nader’s lawyers are arguing he be released to see a doctor for complications following a heart surgery in Germany.

Just chiming in here on this. The heart of this thread sort of gets the sanctions convo wrong. It is a confusing one. But this is a really important thing to get right in the context of the Russia investigation....
I think there is too much conflating of the "sanctions easing" convo with the Rusal delisting. Deripaska was not sanctioned until April 2018. And Rusal and EN+ were also not in the convo until then.
In Jan. 2017, it was still broadly legal for U.S. companies and sanctioned Russian entities (those under sectoral sanctions) to do biz with one another. The fear for Russia was the possibility of harsher sanctions as a result of the meddling or what may come out of the invest.

But it is important to note: The formal request to come up with a way to ease those sanctions never made it to top national security officials tasked with overseeing and implementing sanctions, two of them tell me.
Instead, the Trump transition was so disorganized that by the time the administration got rolling in a real way, Congress was already ramping up sanctions

Re: Trump seeking extension on reunification of families. The identification process, at least as it is playing out in N.J., takes weeks if not months. One source I spoke to said it took one of her clients 3 MONTHS to go through the identification process
As in, proving the client was who she said she was, collecting the paperwork, doing the fingerprinting, the background check...
In other instances, parents in NJ have recently been asked to *text* pictures of their documents to an unidentified person in the facilities where their children reside. Then, they have to wait for the call to move forward...
