This is probably extraordinarily obvious, but it hadn't struck me before today. It is about Brexiters' strategy. They have never answered the question (or, it seems, even considered the question) of what the benefits of Brexit might be... not for the UK, but for the EU. 1/
Brexit is a process of negotiation. In order to be a success, it depends on the agreement of the EU, and on the cooperation of the EU (this is true even in a 'no deal' scenario). But Brexiters have not attempted to 'sell' Brexit to the EU. 2/
They want to improve the UK's position vis-a-vis the EU. They want to strike better trade deals than the EU. They want to be free from the shackles of the EU. They (in fairness) also want to salvage those parts of the current relationship with the EU (which serve the UK well). 3/
But... what are the specific benefits of Brexit from the EU's point of view? If the answer is 'none', or worse, 'none, obviously', that is a large part the reason why the negotiations have been difficult. 4/
The UK threatens no deal in order to try to coerce the EU into giving the UK a better deal (by inflicting huge damage on itself). But it has not tried to convince the EU to give the UK a good deal by pointing out the mutual benefits. I wonder why... 5/5
