Brexiters have always had wildly different visions of Brexit (from 'no deal' through to some sort of EEA-type close relationship with the EU, with all manner of options in between). None of these visions has majority support, in Parliament or in the country. 1/8
There is no obvious path forward. Though there looks now to be majority in the country in favour of remaining in the EU, there is no majority support in Parliament to stop Brexit. 2/8
MPs are intent on trying to find a Brexit which can be agreed with the EU, and which can command a majority in Parliament. Theresa May tried and failed. Soon, a new PM will try - and will more than likely fail. 3/8
What then? If there is no majority for a) leaving with a deal; b) leaving without a deal; and c) revoking A50; we will remain stuck. If this Parliament cannot choose between the available options (perhaps via a people's vote); we will remain stuck. 4/8
On all sides, there is agreement that the Brexit process cannot be allowed to drag on and on. The uncertainty is damaging the economy, and the attention on Brexit is making it impossible to focus on governing the country. 5/8
A further extension in October will only prolong the agony. If there is to be an extension, the UK should have a plan - and will in all likelihood need to demonstrate to the EU that it has a plan. 6/8
If this Parliament cannot make one of the available choices before October, I can't see any option other than a general election. The general election would likely change the Parliamentary arithmetic, and would enable the various groups to try to secure a new mandate. 7/8
Doubtless, some will argue for 'no deal'. Some for revoking Article 50. Some for exit with a deal. It is, of course, possible that Parliament will remain deadlocked. But I can't see any other way of reaching a solution. Let's hope everyone is ready. 8/8
