Important to remember that in the name of "unity" and "bipartisanship" Lincoln chose Andrew Johnson as his VP, a blunder that stalled Reconstruction and doomed the cause of civil rights for a century.
We can talk about polarization all we want, how dangerous it is, but polarization isn't a bad thing when you have a political party that is beyond extreme, is dangerous, and is caught in a fascist fever.
History shows us that accommodating fascism doesn't temper it. People want to believe that working with fascists will bring them to the table and calm them, but it doesn't work. They overtake the system, time and time again.
Also, while we're talking about setting history straight, Lincoln tried multiple times to move freed slaves away from America, including an attempt to hand them over to Britain, and believed they didn't have a place in the US. But...that's a conversation for another time.
