As part of my Art Director job I review ( a lot of ) portfolios for possible artist positions. Here are a few advises.
#1: Please make sure to have an easy to access online portfolio? you have NO idea how many submissions I have to decline because I can't access or see any link.
#2: make sure to update your portfolio with your most up to date works.. I know we are all under NDA in the industry, but try to at least add a few personal works.
#3. Always show the reference you used to create your image/concept/3d model. If it is an original piece, mention it.
#4. Showcase a bit of your process/workflow. I need to see how your mind works when you create something. Do you create thumbnails? what your texture map looks like?
#5: 3D: Try to showcase a few ingame/ low poly VS highpoly works. As 3D artists, studios will require you to be to work in both areas. Turntable is a + too, and don't forget the reference pictures :)
#6 Think of your work presentation too. A bit of lighting work is important in order for the reviewer to appreciate the details/shaders to a full effect.
#7: When it comes to characters/props, try to showcase a few variations. Concept art is about introducing visual possibilities of a same idea. You can polish one of the designs and leave a few propositions at a rough level, helps also to show how you art reads in speed concept.
#8: Quality over quantity yes, but a 3 pictures portfolio won't get you anywhere. I'm serious. There is a LOT of competition out there, so even if you are just out of your school, there is no excuse. Show me some dedication!
#9 Make some research on the industry, and on what you want to do 8 hours a day for the upcoming years. Make sure your portfolio reflects this. 3D artist is a very wide subject and while it is good to show different set of skills, try to put one in front.
#10. And lastly, if you are not selected, try to see what you could improve, don't give up! Like I said before, being an artist is a journey. We all become better as long as we keep on practicing, one drawing/model at the time.
