#INSPIRATION: Can't talk about #ALIEN the movie without crediting one of the most underrated designer giant in the field: Ron Cobb. His influence in the mechanical design and overall aesthetic is immense and go way beyond the movie itself.
more of Ron Cobb designs for the Nostromo
you can start to recognize some of the shapes lines of the Nostromo here, the cramped cockpit design, or the bow window where ash supervises the expedition.
Ron cobb designs are practical and down to the little details that makes the world more believable. That was new in the industry.
In the early script, there was an ancient alien pyramid AND a crashed alien spacecraft. They decided to simplify things and combined both. You can see also the first design attempt on the Space Jokey before they added Giger to the team to tackle the alien designs. ( good call )
Also his famous Standard Semantics that still influence any scifi fans up to today
more Alien works.. but that is just the tip of the Iceberg.. Do you guys want to see more Ron COBB designs and how much of an unknow Icon he is ?
Buckle up! ( warning, long thread) Let's start with the obvious: Aliens ( 1986 )
more Ron Cobb designs on Jim Cameron's Aliens.
Abyss (1989) with of course Jim Cameron's eye for good technical design.
Back to the future ( 1985 )
Total Recall ( 199) and yeah sorry, made a mistake by posting some of these designs in the Aliens post :P
Space Truckers ( 1996 )
Conan the Barbarian. ( 1982) Maybe the movie he worked the most on, from sets, to props and costume designs. an amazing work.
more Conan the Barbarian designs by Ron Cobb.
Conan the Barbarian, more designs and a cameo as the Black Lotus dealer in the movie :) ( Stygian, not haga )
He designed also some aliens for the cantina for
STAR WARS a New Hope(1977) but was uncredited. Yes, that is what IMDB says, "UNCREITED" I don't know the story behind it. His Hammerhead is still one of the most iconic races in the SW lore.
for "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK" ( 1981 ) he designed the Airplane for the Fight sequence ( you know.. splaatch! )
and to end this ( very long ) thread on Ron Cobb #art #design, some of his personal spacescape paintings.
ok... one last he did for Jodorowsky's DUNE ( 1975 ) ... yes along With Moebius, Giger, Chris Foss.. Most of his works can be seen there, enjoy the digging! ( I recommend watching his cartoons from the late 60's too, still up to date and very accurate. )
His whole Career needs to be more exposed and consecrated. He is one of the biggest movie designers out there. Most of the new generation in the industry almost don't know or acknowledge his legacy When you think of a scifi corridor, Ron Cobb is here. @ArtStationHQ
