George Nader's lawyers pushed back today in court. “If you look at the images, it’s not clear all of them are child pornography,” his lawyer said, citing a video allegedly found on Nader's phone that showed a prepubescent boy who was not fully dressed. (The judge balked at this.)
Despite the effort by Nader’s team, a federal magistrate judge ruled today that prosecutors established probable cause. This means the case against Nader will move to a grand jury, presumably to bring an indictment. (He was charged via criminal complaint, not indicted yet.)
An FBI agent, who was not involved in the case until last week, testified Monday that the videos were sent and received on the WhatsApp messaging application. The agent also said there were text messages in a foreign language, but the FBI hadn’t translated it to English yet.
Nader is a Lebanese-American and has advised the leadership of the United Arab Emirates for years. He has previously been convicted in the US of transporting child pornography and pleaded guilty to several crimes in the Czech Republic related to sexual contact with teenage boys.
