New work from our lab led by @juhyemlee maps how flu can escape polyclonal human immunity: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Watch the video abstract below for key findings (or read on in this Tweet chain):
1/5: We completely map how mutations to HA of H3N2 flu affect viral neutralization by human sera.

2/5: Single viral mutations often have >10 fold effects on neutralization by polyclonal serum.

3/5: But different mutations escape the immunity of different human individuals.
4/5: This individual-to-individual variation isn't present for ferrets, which are commonly used lab model.

5/5: These results have implications for viral evolution and disease susceptibility: in particular, different viral mutations may be strongly favored in different people.
Thanks to Rachel Eguia who helped tremendously with this work, and collaborators @seth_zost, @saketkc, Patrick Wilson, @trvrb, Terry Stevens-Ayers, Michael Boeckh, @AeronHurt, @Lakdawala_Lab, @SCOTTeHENSLEY
*Special thanks* goes to @SCOTTeHENSLEY and @seth_zost: the Hensley lab largely pioneered the concepts that our work explores. We've used new methods to show that their ideas might be even more true than they thought.
Also, thanks to @JShendure lab for video abstract instructions:
