As a first year PhD student I time-stamped several papers. Rowhammer.js for instance after seeing a mailing list post from another phd student doing something similar.
This helped me as a Newcomer to get recognition for my work. It also didn't go bad for the other group because
They now saw my paper and ended up with a related but different story. Flush+flush, time-stamped after a reject + wanted to build a follow up work on it.
Both papers were rejected from top tier but then accepted (rowhammer with shepherding) to DIMVA.
Now both papers are very uncommonly often cited (160+147 as of today) for DIMVA papers.

"Hyping" rowhammer.js didn't get it into top tier, but it was quite helpful to make it known and to get a Newcomer successfully into the field.
+the pretty thorough public "peer review" by many people from the field found way more errors than secret reviews normally find + we got them fixed *before* submission

Speculative Side-Channel Attacks is misleading terminology and usually used incorrectly. We should all avoid using it and @intel, you should avoid using it too. Not only because it is misleading, but because it hinders successful communication on mitigations.
Let me elaborate:
A side-channel attack uses measurements of side effects to gather enough *meta data* (power consumption, runtime, cache state, etc) to *infer* secret information.
#meltdown #spectre #zombieload and related attacks and variants do not leak meta data. They leak the actual data.
There is no need to infer secret information from meta data, there is no meta data involved. Hence, they are *no side-channel attacks*.

"But they use flush+reload". Sure, but that doesn't make the attack a side-channel attack. Let's assume the following:

1. Flush+Reload enables highly reliable exploitation of DF bugs (change value exactly @ the right cycle) [1/4]
2. with F+R: first automated DF vs. DF-bug distinguisher (prev. "several days" of manual work)
3. Relation DF-bug (a value changes [2/4]
while assumed it cannot) <-> HTMs (value cannot change in a transaction): Wrap syscalls preventatively+autom. in TSX transactions->[3/4]

When Shiro was sixteen he found out that the church that his family had joined almost a year prior had a summer camp for the youth. Due to the fact that the church itself was fairly large and had multiple congregations scattered around the country,
events like these camps were organized geographically, with a dozen or more congregations banding together to put on these events for the youth; one specifically for the boys and one specifically for the girls.

The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
