The streets around us are often more beautiful than we stop to see. This is Minet Road, SE5....
... named after the Minet Family who bought the land in 1770. They were originally French Huguenots who fled France in the C17th. The estate was mainly market gardening & orchards (for nearby London) in the C19th...
... it was developed for housing linking London to the ancient village of Camberwell (which had appeared in the Doomsday book). They did it well though donating land for a church & building simply & well. Love this corner.
Opposite the corner of Minet Rd is Knarchbull Rd. Sir Edward Knatchbull had inherited the surrounding land in 1745 & had sold it to Hughes Minet in 1770. It has villas...
...high terraced (well semi-detached) houses ...
...lower & redder terraces (see the double door. Presumably for flats above & below?)...
... and this lovely corner cottage. Rus in urbe. (It seems to be to let if anyone’s interested...)
The corner it’s in is that of Grade II listed @myattsfields on land donated by the Minet Estate & named after Joseph Myatt - a local market gardener. The Victorians knew how to make a park & many of the original buildings survive - including this summer house.
The park (@myattsfields) is now run by volunteers as well as by @lambeth_council & gosh they’re doing a good job 👍
It was originally designed by this remarkable woman, Fanny Wilkinson, who seems to all intents & purposes to have been first woman in Britain to work as a professional landscape gardener. You can read more about her here: ucl.ac.uk/bloomsbury-pro…
We’ve (rather randomly) picked these as they’re not far from our office but they make a point. When walking around your town, there is always a history to be found & questions to answer. We’ll leave you with these 2. Why the coat of arms & were these ‘windows’ always blocked?
