That is no excuse for the vile behavior that we see @propublica reporting here, and every single person involved in that @CBP Facebook group should never work in law enforcement again. It is little wonder why migrant kids are suffering and dying in America’s concentration camps.
The report—along with today’s congressional visit to the camps—only reinforced why they have to be closed now. That Trump, his government, and his supporters only deflect or deny the truth of these horrors is an echo from history that should chill us all. cnn.it/326L7kD

This is tough to look at, but this is where I’m from. Cuyahoga County is where I was born and raised. We have to tell the truth about what is going on inside our prisons in jails, starting with our own communities.

The interview Michael Smerconish did Saturday of a police officer involved in the Central Park jogger case was irresponsible. The officer made unsubstantiated claims to make it appear that the men exonerated in the #CentralParkFive case are guilty. 1/
@smerconish interviewed Eric Reynolds, a former police officer who at age 29 arrested two of the defendants in 1989. Smerconish asked Reynolds about depictions in #WhenTheySeeUs of police coercing the teenage boys to confess. Reynolds said: “That’s ridiculous.” 2/
Reynolds said they "knew" the boys were involved in the rape after police asked Kevin Richardson how he got scratched. "He then admitted that the female jogger scratched his face. That’s the first we realized that they were involved in the attack” of the jogger. 3/

My 17 year old daughter, a budding filmmaker who is a huge fan of @Ava, was deeply and forever moved by @WhenTheySeeUs. It made the injustice real to her.

So she went to the New York Public Library today to look at old records and stories on the Central Park Five case.

What my daughter found, with the help of a librarian, when she began searching the New York City newspapers, including the @NYTimes, the @NYPost, and my former home at the @NYDailyNews was absolutely disgusting.

Each newspaper played a role in the public conviction of the boys.
Less than 48 hours after the jogger was assaulted, the front page of the @NYTimes Metro section had a huge headline that said:

"YOUTHS RAPE AND BEAT CENTRAL PARK JOGGER."

They reported it as absolute fact.
They detailed the arrest of the 5.
Then boldly stated that they did it

Linda Fairstein is trapped in a dilemma. If the men known as #CentralPark5 are innocent, then the police may have coerced them to “confess.” She refuses to accept the latter, so she’s stuck insisting that these men are guilty of something. 1/

In her WSJ op-ed, she finally admits, “Mr. Reyes’s confession, DNA match and claim that he acted alone required that the rape charges against the five be vacated. I agreed with that decision and still do.” 2/
But there were other assaults that night and Fairstein still insists "there was certainly more than enough evidence to support those convictions of first-degree assault, robbery, riot and other charges." 3/

This week (April 19) is the tragic 30th anniversary of the brutal rape of Trisha Meili which led to the subsequent framing and conviction of what has come to be known as the #CentralParkFive: Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise. 1/
I was a teenager in the Bronx at the time of this case. It is a defining episode in the narrative of race and policing in NYC. I went to school with kids from Schomburg, the complex where several of the falsely accused lived. Their story deserves to be heard. 2/

and the world of NYC in the 90’s - AIDS and its initial treatment sucesses, the devastation of crack epidemic, the repetitive tragedy of black boys sentenced as adults for minor crimes
I wept every day doing that work - but was astounded by my clients ability to continue to seek and offer love in the most horrific and traumatic circumstances.
