I’ve just had to call the police on my sister now more times than I can count on my hands. She has been off meds for at least 8 months and every day off of them her brain continues to deteriorate. She threatened my mom and me. The police came and refused to take her to a hospital
For those who have been in this situation, you know how horrible it feels to do this... but it’s the only option. This is the first time now that police haven’t taken her to the hospital. This is negligence on behalf of LA Police/Sheriff. She has no phone, no money, nowhere to go
One of the SIX officers who came over told me, “There are lots of homeless people with mental issues. We can’t bring everyone to the hospital.” I nearly lost it. She is a threat to herself and other and these officers have failed to do their duty.
This needs to be recognized as the equivalent to someone with a physical injury... she needs help immediately. You wouldn’t leave a person with a broken leg outside. You bring them to a fucking hospital. My mom just called the police again so we’ll see what happens this time.
I don’t want to talk about this after the worst has happened like with my dad. This is happening now. We can help her now. The system can still save her if they valued human fucking life.
The police just left again and said my sister can file a restraining order against my mother if she’d like!? What the fuck @LAPDHQ @LASDHQ. Your failure to handle this situation has put myself, my mother, my sister, and the public in danger.
I just called 911 again and asked for paramedics instead of police. We’ll see what this outcome brings.
The same people showed up and asked my mom “weren’t we just here?” Then left again. That’s 3 times they have now left someone who is a danger to herself & others out on the street. Will call individual hospitals now as @LAPDHQ @LASDHQ can’t do their fucking job.
UPDATE: My sister is no longer standing in front of my mom's building and we don't know where she went with a bag and suitcase. She has no money and no cell phone. She will refuse any and all treatment due to her illness. Not sure what else can be done at this point.
Just called a number of hospitals individually. They all told me to call 911. Round and round we go.
Thanks to the help of a Twitter user, I was directed to a 24/7 hotline that provided me with very useful information.... some of it quite ironic. They recommended I call the police back to now file a missing persons report for the same person they could have assisted this morning
I was also given the number to something called the "Network of Care" and was told to leave a message requesting a team start a file for conservatorship - so if my sister does end up in the hospital, an advocacy team will help move things in the right direction.
Spoke to 911 for the fourth time today - this time to file a missing persons report. They are sending an officer back to my mom's place now. The dispatcher was surprised at what happened this morning & told me the officers should have arrived w/ a mental health professional.
UPDATE: An officer arrived to my mom's place to process the missing persons report... and on their way over, they spotted my sister standing on a corner a few blocks away just staring into space. I'm now home, but spoke to the officer over the phone and told him the situation...
I informed him that the first call I made I mentioned this had to do with someone mentally unwell. This officer was surprised to hear that a mental health evaluator was not dispatched with officers. He just called for one to come at 9:40pm. I first called police at 11:21am.
I am thankful this officer is treating my mother & the situation w/ the seriousness it deserves. My sister has been standing outside w/out food or water for nearly 10 hours. Now we must wait for the evaluator to come and determine whether she needs to be brought to the hospital.
UPDATE: The evaluator didn't come for some reason. The officer then offered to drive her to the hospital. She refused, so they left. She remains outside and will spend the night outside because no one can take her to the fucking hospital.
UPDATE: I received a call at 4:49am from UCLA ER. My sister apparently walked in saying she was having complications with a pregnancy. The hospital called me after she started telling them it was the government who impregnated her.
This has happened before, where she would be compliant to go to a hospital w/ us & then tell the ER nurse some bogus story about stomach cramps, MS, headaches - the pregnancy story is a new one. It’s as if deep down she knows she needs help, but for the life of her can’t admit it
Just found out my sister didn’t check herself in. My mom kept calling the 24hr psych line & eventually a paramedic drove to where my sister was still STANDING on the same corner @ 3am. She had urinated on herself so they brought her in. And then she told them the pregnancy story.
