I hate myself for saying this, but as much as I worry about the privacy properties of Libra: at very least it’s an attempt to democratize payments. The alternative is a cartel payment/banking system that eats a huge chunk of people’s income.
I say this in response to articles like @ncweaver’s: where he says “why didn’t Facebook just make another PayPal or Zelle.” I think this seems like a pretty easy question to answer. lawfareblog.com/facebooks-cryp…
By the way: how many people have actually used and enjoyed Zelle? I’m curious because several people have spoken approvingly of it following the launch of Libra.
Ok let’s try this as a poll:
I’m not thinking Zelle is really winning here. And that’s not surprising, since it seems to be a bank-only service which (1) ensures the banks, and not tech companies, have access to the best money transfer features, which also ensures that (2) it’s a marketing and UX disaster.
