ICYMI: A U.S. government attorney told startled appellate court judges that it should not be required to provide soap to children concentrated into overcrowded camps.

If you think that is an intellectual exercise, you haven’t been paying attention to what’s been going on at these camps.
Other conditions in these camps that the Justice Department attorney defended in this video:

* sleep deprivation
* exposure to cold temperatures
* not providing toothbrushes

Watch the DOJ do this at length starting around minute 27 of this video.
A dry but crucial legal point: The DOJ attorney argues later in the video that “safe and sanitary” is vague and unenforceable, in keeping with Trump admin’s longstanding goal to shred the 1997 Flores consent decree.

They want no limits on how and how long these kids are held.

Amnesty's @MilenaBuyum reports that Turkish activist Yiğit Aksakoğlu is being released from pre-trial detention, but philanthropist Osman Kavala is being kept in prison.

Both are among 16 being tried in connection with the peaceful 2013 Gezi protests.
This is the court's interim decision.

Context: Erdogan's vilified Mr. Kavala as "Turkey's Soros." The case against him and 15 others highlight the criminalization of protest and dissent there, and the dangers of the demonization of civil society leaders internationally.
It almost goes without saying: Financier and philanthropist George Soros is regularly vilified by the self-styled nationalists like Erdogan, Hungary's Orbán and Trump and his allies in the United States.

Mark Twain chronicled the Diamond Jubilee at the end of an international lecture tour, calling the procession an “allegorical suggestion of the Last Day.”
The New York Public Library has one of the few copies of that report in a private collection. I read it years ago while writing a play on Twain’s life.

It’d been a rough time for Twain. His daughter died the last year, but he kept his dark humor, seeing armageddon in the parade.
The report’s also fascinating in that it followed Twain’s tour around the globe—Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ceylan (now Sri Lanka), Fiji, India, South Africa, and more—and it includes a long riff on the British empire.

He became a staunch anti-imperialist soon after.

The Examiner’s update shows the Times request for comment was wholly appropriate and unremarkable, but the continuing existence of this story suggests perhaps it wasn’t.

That false premise will continue to arm opponents of the press, including Trump, long after this correction.
The story’s problem wasn’t that it lacked context.

It was that it damaged journalism in the United States by depicting the most mundane and routine practices in journalism as a national scandal and allowed the country’s most anti-press president to weaponize that fallacy.
Put that in the correction, @dcexaminer.

The biggest name in the history of the sovereign citizen movement, Winston Shrout, is now a fugitive. He was convicted in fed court in OR on 19 counts in 2017, sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2018, and was allowed to stay out of prison pending appeal.
In December the court ruled that, if the Appellate Court denied his motion to remain free pending appeal, he'd have to turn himself in to federal prison on the following Monday.
On March 1st, the Appellate Court denied his motion, so he was required to turn himself in but he didn't.

An entire floor of the courthouse was closed to the public and press for more than an hour. During that time, attorneys secretly entered the courthouse to argue before three federal appellate judges over a grand jury subpoena.
