Yesterday in #physics class, I had to have the discussion about learning vs. telling the answer. I got to use my favorite Karate Kid analogy - "wax on, wax off" to emphasize that sometimes you have to do tedious things to learn.

2/ What happens when you just tell students answers? They have trouble learning complicated concepts. Personally, I love this (older) video showing students trying to explain the phases of the moon and the cause of seasons. It's great.
3/ Another point I mention to students.

If #physics was as easy as me just telling you the answer, I promise you I would do that. I'm not trying to make physics hard just for no reason. Physics is difficult on its own accord (and honestly, that's what makes it awesome).
4/ Humans don't climb Mt. Everest or run marathons because they are easy. They do them because they are difficult.

Let's start with the simplest calculation of Pi - the ratio of circumference to diameter for round objects. wired.com/2014/03/calcul…
2/ If you want to do this calculation of Pi, just find a bunch of circular objects of different size. Use a string to wrap around and measure the circumference and then measure the diameter. Plot C vs. d - the slope is PI.
3/ But wait! #PiDay is only Pi in the USA where we use date format of month/day/year.

For everyone else, today is 14/3/2019 - which is NOT Pi. I suggest the other Pi day is July 22 (22/7/2019) since 22/7 is a great fractional representation of Pi. wired.com/2011/03/what-i…

Here's a perspective on satellite mega-constellations that nobody has mentioned. (We are ALL tired of this, but I think this is interesting).

The real reason SpaceX is putting up a mega-constellation at this time is because of the laws of nature. It was inevitable.../1
2/ Many metrics of information growth show exponential growth. Examples: Moore's law, computer speeds, agents on the internet of things, sensors. See review here: ourworldindata.org/technological-…
3/ Even before humans existed, we see evidence of exponential growth in information. Consider the sizes of genomes. This plot has a slope of 1 on a log-lot chart, so this is exponential growth in DNA complexity. phys.org/news/2013-04-l…

Yesterday I met with labor union representatives who asked me, "What are people telling you on the doors about how we can move forward?"

"Forward" is a really great-sounding, popular political term. Obama used it. So did Communist China in the 1980's: (向前看) I have, too.
It came up at our healthcare/reproductive freedom roundtable last night. "How do we move forward?" I asked my guests @MargieInTheDMV and @srobgyn.

Certainly, recognizing the need to move forward and having conversations is important, and a first step as Margie pointed out.
The refrain after a tragedy like #NewZealandTerroristAttack is always how to move "past" it. The same words used in the wake of the #Blackface scandals here in Virginia.

The metaphor underlying it all is: we're all on a linear path: backward is bad, forward is good.

Learner needs to regard info as important, intriguing, or beautiful. Then deep learning occurs. Learner needs to be in charge of the question. But, few students will not take a deep approach to learning.
