in honor of @SlackHQ ipo filing, I have a story.

once upon a time, I started a company with some friends. we called it bloodhound.sh. we envisioned a little pup with a magnifying glass sifting thru machine data for actionable insights.
within weeks we shortened it to hound.sh, which stuck until we got a cease-and-desist from hound-ci. 😢 desperate, the four of us (me/@cyen/@toshok/@maplebed) provisioned drinks and brainstormed names for hours: trufflepig.io, datafairy and so on.
one of the concepts we loved the most had to do with bees: structured data, cooperation, diligence, sweetness. naturally all the normal terms and suffixes were in active use.

but then we noticed honeycomb.io was registered to slack, and didn't seem active. 🤔
we reached out and offered to buy it. but we had just a pinch of seed money and expected it to be out of our budget, or an agonizing choice.

but slack ⭐️gave us⭐️ the domain for free -- at the cost of the legal paperwork -- and threw in hny.co on top of it.
so happy ipo day, @slackhq. thanks again for your generosity, for bailing out a baby startup in desperate need of a name. this journey is 1% finished, and we'll be rooting for you all the way.

This is an absolutely inspiring story of how one company transformed its culture and practices to let engineers own their code in production, with 3 SREs supporting 15-20 devs on a single monolith codebase.
One super important point: being on call rarely is a way worse experience than being on call regularly. In my experience, a six week rotation is the sweet spot.

Another: you need to have oncall buddies. They have three oncall at all times, primary/secondary can also work well.
Impressed at how well they worked to split up responsibilities: three rotations inside a single monolith is an advanced maneuver. Nice work.

My favorite detail is the CODEOWNERS file ☺️

... the truest sign of a healthy team and healthy system is this: you mostly use your observability tooling for

🔮 business
🔭 product
🔎 other higher order use cases.

Not incident response, not even bugs. But that doesn't mean you stop using it. Quite the opposite.
Teams that have clawed their way out of reactive mode tend to use observability tooling *even more*.

🌟 for understanding user behavior
🌟 making informed decisions
🌟 resolving conflicts like gentlefolk
🌟 retrofitting in advance of known scaling cliffs
Observability tooling is a hard prerequisite or terrific assist for efforts like

🌟 improving your deployment pipeline, running multiple builds at once
🌟any sort of controlled injection of chaos
🌟 load testing, identifying said scaling cliffs
🌟 satisfying one's curiosity

I'll tell ya a story.
Once upon a time there was a team that had it pretty good. They were internal-facing in a VBCA, supporting a variety of analysts of different types, with about 3 dozen small projects clustered around a large but mostly stable analysis model.
The work was mostly about fronting the analysis model in several different ways to several different other teams, each of whom had different (fairly cool and interesting) needs.

early on, Gabe tells Zora that she should run in the sand under suboptimal conditions to get better at running. When she meets Umbrae, who is trained to run underground, Umbrae is faster and stronger. But Umbrae has never seen a car/windshield wipers so that’s how she gets got.
tons of foreshadowing in this movie, much of which has been discussed, but one I just caught this time was the living spider emerging from underneath the fake spider.

My conversion/Vocation story: once upon a time I was a good Catholic, born in an amazing Catholic family and very involved in the Church. I even went to minor seminary when I was 11 years old. In time that all disappeared. What happened to me? Why did I leave the faith?
I am not sure when exactly, but when I left seminary some part of me also left God, little by little. It started as a feeling of lack of freedom. I thought that being with God didn’t allow me to be myself. That I couldn’t choose. I thought the Church was the Church of NO..
So, I went to Madrid to study to become an English teacher. I wanted to travel the world. I wanted to meet people (yeah, I am an extrovert 😜), and people I met. Tons of them. The world was winning and my experience of God seemed so distant. It was a thing just for kids...
