highlights of Amsterdam trip:

🍭 @euruko in Rotterdam on a BOAT!! My first time set foot on a cruise ship!
🍭 ridiculous adventures trying to acquire a usb-c cable
🍭 dinner next to a wild @nathenharvey
🍭 roving the eerily sunlit streets at 10 pm and 4 am

🍬 opening at @devopsams, remembering what an enormous labor of love every devops days is
🍬 the thunderous reaction when I mentioned offhandedly that managers have no moral right to demand oncall unless they carve out enough contiguous development time for you to fix shit

🥨 the waffles, the pancakes. the breads and cheeses. lord almighty but the 🌟waffles🌟
🥨 european hotel breakfasts 😍😍😍
🥨 smuggling bread and jam and bread and cheese out of breakfast erry day just nibbling nonstop
🍷 the wine that was cheaper than sparkling water lol

... and in non food news, at the airport we were all instructed to LEAVE ALL LIQUIDS IN OUR BAGS.

ANY AMOUNT. ANY LIQUIDS.

Ditto electronics, battery packs. Shoes on. Line flew past, dude chirped "welcome to the future!" 😳🤯

Can it be?? Is our long international nightmare soon come to its inglorious end??? ✈️🤞 Is this just an Amsterdam thing?

Anyway, it was a terrible time to be away and I'm dreadfully behind, but I really love Amsterdam and it was a glorious pause. [Pics: "dev hops", tulips]

another unexpected highlight: talking event pipeline architectures with @isotopp and the @bookingcom engineers.

this is an eng team that is building shit 5+ years ahead of the cutting edge of industry, no joke. all that shit I've been saying about arbitrarily-wide structured

events as the source of truth? read-time aggregation only, no destroying precious detail or discarding context at your source of truth? That prometheus-style metrics and roll ups are not even worth writing out, you can just derive them from your event pipeline? All that stuff.

All that stuff, they've been building on for like a decade. It was crazy fun comparing notes. Like, they had to write kafka before there was a kafka.

And because they have this architecture+data, they are *all in* on testing/experimenting in prod. Muahahaha. Kindred spirits.

Anyway, that's it for me for travel for this year... except for my September trip to Ireland for @Shipitcon. I'm trying to cut way back on the travel, now that we have a real marketing team and strategy and a real developer advocate. I am needed more at home.
