Here’s the part of this manifesto where I get to play fantasy GM. Start here to get the background info on Matthew Boyd.
A few weeks ago I threw out some hypothetical trades for Boyd because it had been suggested that the Tigers should expect a return similar to what the White Sox got for Jose Quintana (Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease). I was trying to prove that was unrealistic.
Everyone thought I was serious though, and they called me names. That’s my fault for poor communication, I suppose. So, what follows are what I deem to be more realistic trade packages for Boyd. These ones probably won’t make Tigers fans as happy.
Trade 1 – Boyd to STL for OF Dylan Carlson and 3B Elehuris Montero. Carlson is a young (20) switch-hitting corner OF rocketing up prospect lists. Currently hitting .280/.363/.493 in AA. Montero (also 20) has top-100 potential with +power but questions about discipline and defense
Trade 2 – Boyd to LAA for Brandon Marsh, Jose Soriano, and Orlando Martinez. Marsh and Martinez are both outfielders who flash all five tools and solid patience at the plate. Soriano has a big arm and a plus curve, but control issues.
Trade 3 – Boyd to ATL for Drew Waters and Greyson Jenista. Entirely possible Waters is untouchable. He’s a young (20), switch-hitting center fielder in AA with above-average power and speed. Jenista is a corner OF with plus raw power and patience but swing issues.
Trade 4 – Boyd to PHI for Alec Bohm and Adonis Medina. Bohm was the #3 pick in 2018 and started slowly, but just hit AA and could be an above-average hitter with above-average power at 3B/1B. Medina has frontline stuff but the results haven’t been there.
Trade 5 – Boyd to SDP for Tirso Ornelas, Esteury Ruiz, and Owen Miller. Ornelas is a young (19) OF with ab-avg power and hitting ability. Ruiz is a probable OF who shows power, speed, and an aggressive approach. Miller is an IF who is fringe-average to average across the board.
Trade 6 – Boyd to TEX for Bubba Thompson, Sherten Apostel, and Jayce Easley. Thompson has huge outfield tools, Apostel could offer above-average hitting and power at 3B, and Easley (Damion’s son) is a middle infielder with speed and some feel to hit.
Trade 7 – Boyd to MIL for Tristen Lutz, Bryce Turang, and Eduarqui Fernandez. Lutz has big raw power and some hitting ability but might be a below average OF. Turang could be a plus SS with speed and patience but little pop. Fernandez is a lottery ticket OF.
Trade 8 – Boyd to CHC for Nico Hoerner and Brennen Davis. Hoerner has average to above-average tools across the board at 2B/SS and maybe CF. Davis is a CF with loud tools and he appears far more advanced as a hitter than expected. Could be a top-100 type soon.
I’m tired of doing these. I could probably do them for ARI, NYY, HOU, BOS, MIN, and LAD but I don’t wanna. And remember the Tigers can (and should) package Shane Greene in any of these deals if it helps. I’m looking at you, St. Louis
And that's all I have for you.

TL;DR - Matthew Boyd is probably good. Similar players are paid about $9 million per win. Boyd's surplus value should be enough to net the Tigers 2-3 high quality prospects, but probably not a top-25 level talent.
