Four years ago, the Supreme Court held that state bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional. The right-wing media takes in response have not held up very well. mediamatters.org/research/2015/…
Notably, Martha MacCallum, whom Fox News describes as a "straight news" anchor and wanted to have moderate a Democratic debate on the network, argued at the time that the decision would lead to polygamy.
Here's a video @mmfa made at the time rounding up ten years of Fox News fearmongering about marriage equality. It would lead to people inevitably to everything from polygamy to incest to people marrying turtles.
@mmfa Fox has largely abandoned the field on marriage equality in the years since. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of soul-searching going on there. Instead, they've simply transferred their culture war energies into "religious liberty" arguments and anti-trans bigotry.
When your audience and political movement are built around fearmongering about people who are different from yourselves, you always need to find a new enemy.
And if other people get hurt along the way, well, that's their problem.
