And was arrested, prosecuted, charged $1000 for an ankle monitor the judge forced him to wear instead of caging him pre-trial, then jailed for non-payment of the mandatory fee for the ankle monitor. For stealing a beer.

What. Is. Your. Point?
It’s wrong on every level:

1. Disproportionate.
2. No one should ever be jailed for failure to afford bail, court charges, fines, or other criminal justice related costs.
3. Cost taxpayers thousands to arrest, prosecute & jail him.
4. He’ll now be more likely to get rearrested.
“In GA, a man stole a beer worth $2 from a corner store. The court ordered him to wear an ankle monitor for a year. The company administering it charged him so muchthat he eventually owed more than $1,000. He fell behind & judge jailed him for non-payment.”theappeal.org/fines-and-fees…
It’s so unnerving that so many are okay w/ such a wasteful, unfair, racist punishment system for a $2 beer or other petty “crime.” To end mass criminalization, we need to move way beyond low-level offenses & grapple w/ violence. This is the effort now. Some’ll never be on board.
In NY, it is a violent burglary, mandatory minimum 3.5 years, to take a package from a lobby bc a lobby is considered a dwelling even where there is no violence, or anyone present. Actually the most common type of “burglary.”
But these “violent” crimes that shouldn’t be considered violent are also low hanging fruit. We need to talk about actual violence. And how the punishment system only makes the problem worse: for the person accused & the survivor. This book was eye opening.
