I can see why lots of gay men are anxious at this tweet because similar anologies have been used by the Adam & Steve crowd. That is not the point she’s making however...
There are people who acquiesce in post-modern Gender Identity politics who make the claim that sex is a social construct, that sex based differences don’t matter, and that this is the reason why males who self-identify was women should participate in women’s sport.
Sharron has suffered the effects of testosterone cheating of East German swimmers in the 80s making female competition unfair. And due to this New way of looking at sex and gender people are now pushing a New form of unfairness in women’s sport.
That is what Shannon is talking about. That sex exists, it’s material. Incidentally, this New way of looking at sex and gender is leading to other outcomes too, outcomes that should concern us as gay men.
We now have the ridiculous situation of lesbians being kicked off what we Used to call gay Pride marches, for having the audacity to state that lesbians are female homosexuals, and that lesbians don’t do dick.
How many times when we came out did people say to us ‘how do you know you’re Gay when you haven’t tried it with a girl? Try it you might like it’. This pushing of people of the opposite sex to be included in the same-sex definition of homosexual is 🌈 smothered homophobia.
Post-modern Gender Identity politics is inherently sexist and homophobic. (And as gay men we are not immune from being sexist. For eg we’ve all seen those drag queens who revert to misogyny when they run out of jokes.)
Women and lesbians especially helped stand up for us in the past, and now we’re abandoning them on the alter of this new post-modern way of looking at sex and gender. Even transsexual woman who don’t agree with this new ideology are hounded too.
Sex is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act, the basis on which Our protections are based on as gay men, i.e. same-sex attracted. Sex and biology isn’t going to go away. The truth isn’t going to go away. Don’t institutionalise truth as bigotry in the name of neo-gender.
And for heavens sake stop shouting women down for standing up for their rights using the sexist slur ‘terf’. It’s not even an accurate ‘acronym’. Feminism centres females, including females who don’t identify as women. Feminism excludes males. terfisaslur.com
This is not an argument between women and transwomen. This is an argument between those pushing this new form of post-modern Gender Identity politics, with its 🌈 smothered sexist and homophobic implications, and those increasingly speaking up against it.
There are men&women, lesbians&gay men, and trans people on BOTH sides of the debate. Sexism and homophobia exist in the world. Denying that sex exists, replacing it with neo-gender isn’t going to make sexism and homophobia go away. It entrenches them. The emperor has no clothes.
