I have no problem with prosecutors who are tough on crime. That's their job. But wrongful conviction, evidence tampering, false testimony, suppression of crucial information?
Refusal to support statewide standards regulating the use of body-worn cameras by police officers? The overall record is mixed and disturbing. If mass incarceration is the problem she says it is--and it is--she was an enthusiastic advocate who didn't run a clean shop.

I read the thread and thought, "Surely he's exaggerating." So I checked the article, and no, he's not. The NYT really didn't think this one through.
It would make sense if the headline were, "What rich families want politicians to know." The points they raise--that the very rich have no leisure time, feel constant dread, can't buy homes in the cities where they work, and don't think they'll ever retire--are worth reporting..
It's legitimately newsworthy that *no one* in the US, not even the very wealthy, feels economically secure. But it's not clear what that means. Objectively, these are some of the wealthiest people ever to have lived. But they're not feeling that way.

Imagine, say, Pearl Harbor redux. But this time, our desire for righteous vengeance is channeled into a terrific virtual reality show that leaves everyone quite satisfied.

Still a bit dystopian, but why assume things will be worse because of these new technologies?
Perhaps we'll be better off in a fake world. As the authors' amply demonstrate, we had no surfeit of mayhem back when it was easier to tell the difference.

Of course it's what he thinks; it's what everyone thinks, it's the least surprising perspective imaginable. But this article is odd.
"So there will be speculation that the leak of Darroch's memos was a politically motivated act by someone in London to clear space in Washington for an outspokenly pro-Brexit ambassador." What does that mean?
"So there will be speculation?" By whom? Why would this be the default speculation?

In any event, while I deplore the leak, I can't wait to read the cables.

He says that we paid off the WWII debt with higher revenues due to economic growth, not spending cuts or tax hikes 2/
But as I tried to explain, *we never paid off the debt at all*. Debt in 1970 was higher than it had been in the late 1940s -- but the economy was much bigger, so it became no big deal 3/ nytimes.com/2019/01/09/opi…

Just played around on TikTok for awhile. A combined TikTok/Music.ly is going to be insane.

No one has been able to effectively reach both China AND RoW in social at scale. Total reach is going to be huge. Wouldn’t be surprised if Toutiao is valued over $100B in a year or two.
TikTok + Musical.ly = Vine v2
Bytedance (owns Toutiao, TikTok/Musica.ly) raising $3B at a $75B valuation.

Valued at $30B in late 2017, recent private market transactions trades imply a $62B valuation.

Mr. Trump, in his tweet, described the meeting...as “very good and interesting.”

and the publisher?

"...he felt that Mr. Trump had listened to his arguments. The president......told him he was glad that he had raised those issues and would think about them."
Ok so that's the end result of the meeting. What of the substance?

Trump says they spent a lot of time talking about the fake news being the enemy of the people.

The publisher says the same exact thing.
