Speaking of which, Spiderman Far From Home is really quite ridiculously good. It's been a while since I've had that much simple fun with a Marvel film. Probably not since Ragnarok.
This version of MJ has done more to make me like and be interested in her in two films than I have in 37 years of Spiderman comics.
Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing. He is having a really fucking good time out there.
But Tom Holland. Fuck me. He really is the ultimate on-screen Spider-man. There is no competition. Underneath all that wide-eyed vulnerability and the gags, there is proper nuanced character work going on. This is not the same kid from the first film. He's seen shit.
Feels really quite lucky to keep on being fed a diet of consistently high quality films from this studio, with that unmistakable feeling that the guys behind the camera love the source material as much as you do.
It's in the fishbowl helmet, I reckon. Fuck me, I love Mysterio's fishbowl helmet. Back in the day a film studio would have gotten rid of that. Too silly. Too comics. But Marvel are balls-out on that shit. They commit.
Oh one more thing before I shut up. I never liked the Shard, still don't. Ugly. Tall buildings are needy. But it;s use in Spider-Man suggests it has really permeated the way other countries see London.
It's become part of the London iconography globally. So while Hollywood can shoot Paris, Rome, Prague etc as picture-postcard towns which haven't changed for a hundred years, the Shard kinda forces them to treat London as a more modern city.
Not saying I was wrong, of course. Just that there may have been some erosion in the degree of how right I was.
