This past weekend I was talking with a guy who's worried about climate change. He's super conscientious, but is a busy dad, and doesn't think there's anything he can do. This is an awful, helpless feeling. Let's fix it. Here's a list of things you can do.
1. Talk/post/tweet about it. Surveys show that most people are worried about climate change, but we're scared to talk about it, which makes us feel isolated and creates a spiral of silence (see @KHayhoe's writing on this). By talking, my friend was already taking action.
2. Talk about it to politicians. Contact your reps at every level - city, state/province, country, party heads, etc. Just fire off an email or a quick call and tell them that this issue is important to you and you support them if they take action. Bridge that gap of silence.
3. Do a quick search for local climate groups. If you can't find any, search for national groups. Get on their mailing lists. They'll tell you about quick actions you can take (petitions, emails, calls) and slightly more time-consuming actions (hearings, protests).
There are lots of groups, they vary widely in their strategies, and some will fit your interests and style more than others. That's fine! Challenge yourself, but also feel free to settle on just one group to support. You can't do it all.
4. If you have $$, support the work of climate groups. It's not a substitute for talking about the issue, but it lifts up the voices of good people who are honestly doing this out of a sense of duty, and who are working in some pretty cramped offices (shoutout to my climate pals)
5. Make personal changes and talk about it. I put this later on the list because people will sometimes do this and then not do the other things. You'll find lots of tips online. My favorite? Fly less, whenever you can. I love nerding out and planning local, low-impact vacations.
6. Support people. Support communities hit hard by pollution, people working to prepare their homes for storms and sea level rise, climate scientists and journos in their emotionally difficult work. Support yourself and your friends - take breaks & get help when you need to.
I hope this is helpful! So many people are looking away or becoming fatalistic, and I get it. I do. But this is a critical moment. We're making great strides in a lot of ways, and we can avoid major effects by taking action right now. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
For the good good climate stuff, I follow @JacquelynGill, @KHayhoe, @MaryHeglar, @ClimateAdam, @YaleClimateComm, and more folks I'm sure I'm forgetting.
