Since @yhazony's national conservatism conference is next week, I decided to reread some of my favorite books on nationalism, including IMAGINED COMMUNITIES by Benedict Anderson

It's amazing how resonant it is in 2019
"[N]ationalism thinks in terms of historical destinies, while racism dreams of eternal contaminations, transmitted from the origins of time through an endless sequence of loathsome copulations: outside history."
On the silly thesis that nationalism is a prerequisite to racism:
More on the same subject
On nationalism being rooted in *love of country* and not "hatred of the other":
"Dying for one's country, which usually one does not choose, assumes a moral grandeur which dying for the Labour Party, the American Medical Association, or perhaps even Amnesty International cannot rival, for these are all bodies one can join or leave at easy will."
"If I am a Lett, my daughter may be an Australian...the nation was conceived in language, not in blood, and...one [can] be 'invited into' the imagined community."
Language as a weapon against imperialism
Understanding the concept: nations as imagined communities
Anderson wrote beautifully about how newspapers buttressed imagined communities

Read about the "ceremony" of newspapers and think about how that applies to our collective, continuous use of Twitter
